SOUTH Africa needs to be cleansed. This was what representatives from different religions said yesterday at a national cleansing ceremony at Alexandra Stadium, north of Joburg. The Commission for the Promotion and Protection of the Rights of Cultural, Religious and Linguistic Communities organised the event. More photos after the cut...
Among the faiths represented were traditional healers, Christians, Rastafarians and Muslims.
They came together to ask their gods and ancestors to stop the violence in the country.
Alexandra Traditional Healers Association head, Thelma Siwela (68) said: “The recent attacks on foreigners have just been the latest in a series of bad things.
“Men rape kids, people kill each other for nothing, robberies happen on a daily basis and there are many more crimes. We need to ask our ancestors to protect our country from such evil happenings.”
Prophet Motsoeneng Mboro of the Incredible Happenings Ministry said he attended the event to support peace.
“Jesus preached about love, peace and harmony among his children.
“As children of God, we need to love each other regardless of skin colour, language or the country one originates from.
“In the eyes of God, we are one person in one nation,” he said.
Abubakar Mohlala of the Katlehong Muslim Association said Allah teaches love and peace through the Koran.
“We’ve been praying for the end of violence among the people of the world,” he said.
The cleansing ceremony, which was attended by more than 200 people, was welcomed by community members.
Resident Jimbo Mabunda said the ceremony would heal the people who were hurt oraffected by the xenophobic attacks.
“I’m happy that people are praying to stop the senseless attacks on our brothers,” he said.
