The Vatican on Thursday, April 7, 2016 announced that Pope Francis would travel to Lesbos Island in Greece to meet various catholic leaders and refugees on April 16, 2016.
Federico Lombardi, Director of the Holy See Press office in the announcement stated that the Greek president Prokopis Pavlopoulos and Ecumenical Patriarch of Constantinople, Bartholomew I, invited pope Francis.
“Welcoming the invitation, Pope Francis will travel to Lesbos Saturday, April 16, 2016,” Lombardi said.
According to the Vatican, Patriarch Bartholomew and His Beatitude Hieronimus II, Archbishop of Athens and all Greece will also be present at the meeting in Greece.
Since the war in Syria and Afghanistan, Lesbos Island has been one of the primary destinations for migrants fleeing to Europe.
