December 30, 2015, would have been a day of joy for Sam Belonwu Dim, a Lagos based business man as he would have been joined in holy matrimony but that joy was turned into mourning for his family after a drunk policeman shot him to death on Sunday, December 27, three days to his wedding.
It was gathered from the Sun Newspaper that the sad incident happened at Uruagu Nnewi, Anambra State, during the traditional wedding of the daughter of the in-law of the deceased's friend and business associate.
A family member told newsmen that Dim was virtually ready for his wedding with all the preparation in place. The cow he bought for the wedding was still tied to a tree in the large family compound when reporters visited his family house and had distributed the wedding invitation cards to relations, friends and well wishers far and near, hired a live band, concluded arrangements with the clergy and done other things to ensure that the wedding would be colourful and memorable.
According to his father, Chief Dim, his son’s best man, Martin Afusi and other friends who came all the way from Ghana had arrived Sam’s home in Osumenyi only to be told that he was dead.
Chief Dim narrated how someone had called his son to attend traditional wedding but he initially refused but after much pleading, he decided to honour the invitation with a friend, not knowing that it would lead to his untimely death.
The murdered groom allegedly attended the event with another of his friend, Sunday Oguego and on arrival, according to the friend, as Sam was about to sit down under a canopy set up outside for guests, a mobile police sergeant just pointed his gun at Sam and shot him with the bullet going through his heart and exiting from the back and hit anothe guest.
An angry Chief Dim has been unrelenting in demanding that the police fish out the sergeant and put on him on trial as well as properly investigate the circumstances that led to the death of his son.
He is also furious with the man that invited his son for the traditional wedding, claiming that it took him two days to come and tell the deceased family what happened to his friend, who he invited to a wedding.
He said the man visited the family on Wednesday, December 30, the day, his late son was supposed to wed, to condole with the family.
Since the tragic incident happened, the Sam’s would-be-bride has been inconsolable. At the family home of her late groom, she has been speechless and downcast.
