KHAYELWO Dipai (51) couldn’t stop crying after she heard that her cousin had died at an initiation school. She blamed herself because she had persuaded the woman to go for initiation.
Khayelwo’s tears didn’t stop when boyfriend Motlalentwa Chabalala came to spend the weekend with her.
Later he begged her to stop so he could go to sleep.
But she kept on sobbing.
Finally, Motlalentwa flew into a rage – and he hacked her to death with a spade and a panga.
Then he climbed on her body to reach the rafters, from which he hanged himself.
Their bodies were found in a shack at Monyakeng, Wesselsbron in the Free State on Monday morning.
A source said that a 10-year-old nephew living with Khayelwo heard Motlalentwa pleading with his girlfriend to stop crying so he could sleep.
The little boy was shocked to find the bodies in the bedroom the next morning.
The source said she was with Khayelwo on Sunday morning when news came of her cousin’s death.
“Khayelwo blamed herself. She had told her cousin she needed to become a woman like the others in the family,” said the source.
“The couple had an on and off relationship. Last month they got together again but it ended in bloodshed.”
Police spokeswoman Molebogeng Lechesa said a murder case and inquest docket had been opened.
“I can also confirm a 35-year-old woman was found dead at an initiation school and an inquest docket was opened,” she said.
