He thought it was his lucky day when he grabbed Flora’s phone – but it turned out to be the unluckiest day of his life!
Flora Monyela (25) from Alexandra, north of Joburg was talking on her Blackberry Curve 8520 when the thief tried to steal it.
“I was coming from the mall at around 8pm on Wednesday when a man grabbed me from behind,” said Flora.
“He took my phone away. I screamed and then people came from their houses and chased him.
“They caught him a few streets away and started beating him up.”
Flora said the thug was hit with stones, whipped and given hot klaps.
“If the police hadn’t arrived he would have been killed,” she said.
Flora said the streets of Alexandra have been crippled by tsotsis who rob people.
“I think the beating of the thug will send a message to other thugs who terrorise innocent people on the streets of Alex,” she said.
A resident who did not want to be named said he felt sorry for the thug while he was being beaten.
“He was badly beaten,” he said.
“But these thugs don’t learn. They keep harassing innocent people.
“The people will keep on beating them because police are failing us.
“The thugs get arrested and released the next day.”
Police spokesman Warrant Officer Manare Ramotshela said a man was arrested and a case of robbery was opened at the station.
A suspect appeared in the Alexandra Magistrates Court on Friday.
