“YOU can’t come to this school because you’re all pregnant.” This was what a group of pupils were allegedly told by the deputy principal of Hans Kekana High School.
The expelled pupils from Majaneng near Hammanskraal, Tshwane said this happened after one girl’s waters broke in class on Thursday and she had to be rushed to a clinic.
They said school management was so angry they decided to expel all pupils known to be pregnant.
One grade 10 girl was apparently so upset she went home and tried to overdose on pills.
Yesterday parents were joined by the National Association of School Governing Bodies and Sanco in a march to protest.
They demanded that the girls be allowed to return to class.
A 17-year-old pregnant grade 10 pupil told Daily Sun: “At the beginning of the year all the pregnant girls were called to the staffroom to register our names.
“After one girl almost gave birth at school on Thursday, the deputy principal called us all to her office and told us to leave.
“She told us not to come back to school until we had given birth because we were a bad influence.”
Meanwhile, the SunTeam heard that about 10 pupils are pregnant, but only five obviously pregnant girls were told to leave.
Pitsoane Mokone of the National Association of School Governing Bodies said: “The department’s policy is to allow pregnant pupils to attend lessons.
“We are very disappointed with what the school has done because they are violating the right of pupils to be taught.
“We will take this to the provincial education department.”
The Gauteng Department of Education has not yet come back with comment on the matter.
