Two people were critically injured. One of them, a trapped train driver, was later airlifted to Milpark Hospital.
Twenty-five people had severe injuries while the others had minor injuries, according to Joburg Emergency Services spokesman Robert Mulaudzi.
“We will also conduct a search to ensure no one is still trapped,” he said.
The accident happened early in the morning while people were travelling to work.
Witness Zwelithini Mnyathi (45), a shoemaker, said he had never seen anything like it.
“I heard a noise that sounded like a bomb. When I looked at the station, I saw a cloud of smoke coming from the trains,” he said.
Moments later, he saw people pouring out of the train station and running for their lives.
“I was scared too, so I ran away as well,” he said.
Minister of Transport Dipuo Peters was present at the scene and told the media: “Government is concerned about the fatalities in our transport sector.
“We have seen, last week, Metro buses involved in a crash and people dying there.”
Passenger Rail Agency of South Africa CEO Lucky Montana said R25 million had been put aside for the patients with minor injuries while the company would also pay the hospital bills of those critically injured.
