Coming on the heels of the official recognition of Palestinian state, the Vatican has hosted the Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas.
President Abbas is in Rome to witness the canonisation of two 19th-century nuns from Palestine.
The saints to be canonised are Mariam Bawardy and Marie Alphonsine Ghattas.
A Vatican representative, who spoke on behalf of the Pope said:"To this end, the wish was reiterated that with the support of the international community, Israelis and Palestinians may take with determination courageous decisions to promote peace.”
During the traditional exchange of gifts after an official visit to the papacy, Pope Francis referred to President Abbas as an angel of peace while he was presenting a medallion to him.
He said I think the medallion is appropriate since "you are an angel of peace."
