In a bid to curb what the atheist Communist Party terms infiltration of foreign forces through religion, China has put in place moves to control the spread of religion in the country.
China’s President Xi Jinping was quoted saying: "We must manage religious affairs in accordance with the law and adhere to the principle of independence to run religious groups on our own accord.”
He also said that the foreign forces in western regions of Xinjiang and Tibet, have been indoctrinating people with Islamic teachings and Buddhism.
Government officials say the infiltration of religion has caused the people to defy Chinese rule.
President Xi also said that 'Active efforts should be made to incorporate religions into socialist society.'
There is a general assumption among top Chinese government officials that foreign enemies can use religion to teach Chinese citizens how to subvert party powers and rule.
