Siavonga man gets 5 months for slapping wife after discovering she was living with HIV.
A 30-YEAR-OLD man of Siavonga has been sentenced to five months simple imprisonment for slapping his wife after discovering that she was living with HIV.
Before magistrate Victoria Chitulangoma was Justine Kabanje, a resident of Kanyelele compound, who was charged with one count of assault contrary to the Laws of Zambia. It was alleged that Kabanje on February 17 assaulted Rita Chinduma after a dispute. In mitigation, the accused asked for the court’s leniency, saying he was a breadwinner.
The sentence is with effect from March 15. During trial, Kabanje had told the court that he slapped his wife after he discovered that she was HIV positive and had been taking antiretroviral treatment for five years. “I felt bad because alemfisa (she was hiding this from me) all this time. Not only that, my wife likes sleeping with other men,” Kabanje told the court.
