ENUGU—Former governor of Enugu State, Senator Chimaroke Nnamani, has petitioned the National Assembly Election Petition Tribunal in Enugu challenging the declaration of Senator Gil Nnaji of the Peoples Democratic Party,PDP, as the winner of Enugu East senatorial election by the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC.
Confirming the development in a press statement in Enugu, state chairman of People for Democratic Change, PDC, Mr. Sunday Ani, said the action was necessitated by the widespread irregularities that characterised the election. The statement read further: “On March 28, 2015, the good people of Enugu East senatorial district turned out en masse to perform your civic duty.
‘’You cast your votes overwhelmingly for the candidate of our party, Senator Chimaroke Nnamani, to represent you in the Senate.
“However, to your shock and disbelief, another candidate was announced as winner. The announcement provoked mass protests in Enugu, as well as ceaseless visits, phone calls and messages to our party office and candidate.
“Against this background, Senator Nnamani accepted the responsibility to reclaim the mandate, and this he has done by petitioning the National Assembly Election Petition Tribunal.
‘’We are confident that justice will be done in God’s time. Again, we thank all our supporters and urge you to remain calm and continue to trust in God.”
